As a child I played the violin, the recorder and the piano. In 1994 I got to try my friends accordion. Wow, that was definitely my instrument! Friends in Darmstadt (Germany) had a little Hohner Student 40 which I could borrow. That was great! In 1995 I really needed a bigger accordion. My parents and me went to Henk Kuik in Molenhoek (which now is De Muse in Malden!) and I found a nice accordion: a red Paolo Soprani with 80 basses. I still have this instrument and I probably will never throw it out, because I think your first instrument is extra special! At the end of 1996 I again needed another one, because this time I didn’t have enough registers. We went for a search again and this time I bought a white Piermaria with 96 basses. This was my first new instrument and I was so pleased with it! When I started specializing in Bulgarian folkmusic in 1998 I discovered my Piermaria didn’t have enough options for this kind of music. It didn’t have a cassotto (tone chamber) and again not enough registers. In 1999 I already worked in the accordion shop and I ordered one of my current accordions, a Victoria model A310V with cassotto and enough registers. I still really like this instrument! In 2003 I had microphones build in, so when I have to play on a festival I’m wireless and mobile. Very practical! Since January 2005 I have been in the possession of a (for me) much nicer accordion than my Victoria: A Weltmeister S4 This kind of instrument is used in Bulgaria all the time and that really shows in the music. The Bulgarian ornaments just go better on this instrument than on an Italian one. I’m really lucky that I found such a great accordion here in the Netherlands! In 2005 the Russian-Bulgarian repairman Viktor Melnik in Plovdiv gave my accordion a thorough service, he tuned the instrument and adjusted the keyboard mechanism. Since then there has been no better accordion for me than this one! On YouTube I have some videos of me with my Weltmeister. Since 2010 I have intern microphones build in my Weltmeister, so I can use it when I play at festivals!
