The Rhine occupation had
ended and
the area was demilitarised. In 1933 however Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party came
to power. He unilaterally remilitarised
the Rhineland.
Earlier the
control by the
League of Nations and France over the Saar basin
had ended in a plesbiscite favouring Germany. The constituent states of
Germany had
to all intents and purposes been abolished
by Hitler.
