Han F. Vermeulen

A cultural anthropologist from Leiden University, Han F. Vermeulen studies the history and theory of anthropology, ethnology, and ethnography. He has conducted anthropological fieldwork in North Africa (Tunisia) as well as library and archival research in Europe (including the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Russia). He has edited seven books and convened conferences in Germany (Munich, Leipzig), the Czech Republic (Prague), and the Netherlands (Leiden, Amsterdam, Utrecht). He is currently interested in the history of anthropology, ethnology, and ethnography in Europe and Asia from the eighteenth century onward.

Fieldwork in Drenthe, the Netherlands (1971), resulting in internal report (1973).

Fieldwork in the Khumir Mountains, North-Western Tunisia (1976, 1978), supplemented by library research on the anthropology of North Africa and the Middle-East (1976-1980, 1988-1989), resulting in a paper (1979) and research report (June 1989).

The history of anthropology in the Netherlands, in relation to colonial contexts, civil service training institutions, Oriental scholarship, and developments in anthropology abroad (1980-1984), resulting in articles 1989a, 1994d and several lectures. Continued in 1996-2002.

The early history of ethnography and ethnology in Germany (1984-1988); resulting in MA dissertation (April 1988). Continued in 1991-1995.

Research into the origins and early development of Völkerkunde in Germany, especially in Göttingen (1770-1810), as PhD student (Assistent-in-Opleiding) at the Research School CNWS, Leiden University (May 1991-May 1995), including library and archival research in Germany, Russia and Central Europe during 2 years. Continued in 2006-2008.

The history of anthropological structuralism in the Netherlands (1981-1982; 1986-1987), resulting in articles 1985, 1987a, 1989a and several papers (1999c, 1999e, 2000c). Continued from 1996, concluded in 2002.

Analysis and re-arrangement of the scholarly inheritance of Prof.dr. G.W. Locher (1908-1997) in 1998-1999. The results were published in an inventory of 50 pp. (KITLV Leiden, H 1032) and articles 1997d, 1998a,1999c, 2000a.
