| Believing that rebuilding an existing design in
one's favorite colors is not much of a challenge, the kite designs
of the 'De Vliegerende Hollander' are often rather different - to
say the least. Mainly focusing on single-line static kites, he first
designs the sail and then develops an appropriate frame of spars.
Only then does he start test-flying and improving the kite. His
self-made designs consist of three series - Dice Kites, Impossible
Kites and Mad Hatter Kites - and a bunch of single designs.
Dice
Kites
The Dice Kites started of quite harmless with a design for 4-line
kite, the Dice-Game.
At that time De Vliegerende Hollander was looking for an alternative
4-line design small enough to fly with some mini-handles. Based on a
book about impossible drawings by Bruno Ernst (Avonturen met
onmogelijke figuren, 1985), two connected hexagonal dice-forms -
which the brain perceives as a three-dimensional impossibility -
became the origin of this series of kites. As two or more dice can
be connected in several ways, a journey of discoveries results in
the following series of designs: Dice
Kite I: Roll-the-Dice, Dice
Kite II: Lie-Dice, Dice
Kite III: Dice Rotor, and Dice
Kite IV: Dice-Game.
Impossible
Kites
The
Impossible Kites originated from a painting with impossible placed cubes.
The Impossible
Kite I is the first kite design by De Vliegerende Hollander's
hands. The Impossible
Kite II is a simplified version of IKI.
Mad
Hatter Kites
The Mad Hatter Kites ****. Two designs are now on-line, the Mad
Hatter High Hat and the Mad
Hatter Witch Hat.
