The Ways of all Flesh are a goth rock band from Sheffield, UK. The band members are Dave Redford on vocals, Kate Rennie on bass, programming and PVC (nice to see a girl on bass!!) , Steve Jackson on lead guitar and programming and Kelly Dorset playing the rhythm guitar. Their music is dark and it rocks sometimes it even reminds me of metal a bit!

They released there first full length album Esprit d'Escalier in 2005 but before that they also made a demo, Avalon demo with three tracks. All three songs from the demo are on the album. The dark artwork for Esprit d'Escalier fits the music very wel.

Esprit d'Escalier is a French expresion probably best translated as 'staircase wit'. They use it to to refer to the regret someone feels after missing an opportunity to make a perfect comeback at someone ells.

Interview With Dave (Vocals)

1 - How is it to record your first album?

We've been recording at a local studio and learning as we go! I think the
appropriate phrase is 'slowly but surely'!
Personally I've found that recording vocals is quite difficult because the
surroundings are so completely different from both the practice room and the
stage. But we're over the worst of it and it shouldn't be too long now!

2 - Of which of your songs are you most proud?

Since I tend not to be much involved in the song writing process (I write the
lyrics and the others write the music) it's difficult to say. Of the new
tracks on the album I'm quite happy with the way 'Esprit d'escalier' came
together, as it was more of a collaborative effort and turned out quite
differently from my original idea.

Of the older tracks I think 'Final Resolve' has stood the test of time
pretty well - we've been playing it live since 1997 - although my only
personal contribution to that one was the original rhythm guitar line which
has probably changed beyond recognition now!

3 - What's with the Bon Jovi covers? (Any mention of Bon Jovi covers will be
furiously denied by all band members.)

That was just a bit of nonsense we put in for a joke years ago. Should have
been axed from the biog by now really. We have no current plans to delve
into the Pandora's Box that is soft rock, let's put it that way...

4 - How did you come up with the band name

Our original bass player came up with it and we just liked the sound of it
and the ideas it represents. We weren't consciously looking for a religious
angle although the phrase does appear in older versions of the Bible. To me
it's just a reminder of the fact that we're not going to be around forever,
whether that's individually or as a species.

5 - Is there any subject you would like to write a song about?

I find that the best ideas sneak up on you - if I deliberately set out to
tackle a certain subject it ends up in the bin 9 times out of 10 because it
ends up feeling too contrived. Most of the big issues have already been
adequately covered and most of my personal bugbears are far too boring to
write about! So to answer your question I'd have to say no, but only because
that approach doesn't really work for me.
