The number of class TU2 in their country of origin, Russia, is relatively small. At least this applies those class TU2 which have run on public or industrial railways in Russia: Only one third of the 281 engines (80 confirmed; possibly 94 engines). The TU2s running or having run on pioneer railways are not included in this number. The Russian TU2s mainly ran in Siberia and the Southern Ural region. The European part of Russia hardly saw any TU2s in service.
