Zoals we weten was Dr.Usui het hoofd van de Usui Reiki Gakkai (de Reiki Organisatie die hijzelf oprichtte). Na zijn dood ging het voorzitterschap naar een van z'n beste vrienden, zijn collega Mr. Ushida, die ook de inscriptie schreef voor Usui's gedenksteen op de Saihoji begraafplaats in Tokyo. Mr. Ushida was daarom dan ook Usui's opvolger. Na Ushida's aftreden was de volgende opvolger Mr. Taketomi, die opgevolgd werd door Mr. Watanabe en Mr.Wanami. Mw. Koyama, een charismatische vrouw van in de 90, trok zich begin 1998 terug van deze post. De president op dit moment van de Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai is Mr.Kondo. In Japan is er nooit zoiets geweest als een "grandmaster"
of "Bearer of the Line". In de beide Reiki lijnen, maar meer in het Westen dan in Japan,
zijn enorme veranderingen gemaakt. Veel belangrijke aspecten
van het werken met Reiki zijn uit het traditionele systeem verwijderd
door of Hayashi of Takata. Niet duidelijk is wie de veranderingen
maakte, maar ze hebben er ook goede dingen aan toegevoegd! Over de sociale / culturele en taalkundige redenen voor de verschillen in de Westerse en Oosterse Reiki systemen. Vele van ons vinden de Japanners mysterieus, vriendelijk maar gereserveerd, altijd glimlachend maar echter nooit blij. We zien ze bijna altijd in groepen, en het is moeilijk om persoonlijk kontakt met ze te maken. Het Oosten en Westen verschillen fundamenteel in hun manier van denken en voelen. Bijvoorbeeld: de Japanners gebruiken voornamelijk hun intuitieve rechter hersenhelft. Een van de redenen hiervoor zou kunnen zijn: de taal. De Japanse karakters, kanji genoemd, zijn geen geluiden zoals de letters van ons alphabet, maar tekeningen. Dit betekent dat Japanners op een abstracte manier denken, beeldend van jongs af aan. Logica is in Japan geen belangrijk onderwerp van gesprek. Lineair (rechtlijnig, in rechte lijn) is hun vreemd. De Japanners denken gewoon op een andere manier die niet slechter of beter is dan de onze. Intuitief denken is echter een prachtige eigenschap, en de wereld zou er beter uitzien als Westerlingen deze kunst ook zouden gaan beheersen. Om het Japanse Reiki systeem, dat op een zeer intuitieve manier is opgezet, over te brengen naar het Westen, moest het in logische stappen ingedeeld worden. De Reiki-energie opzich heeft daar niet van te lijden. En of het ene systeem gevolgd wordt of een ander is voor Reiki totaal niet van belang. In het Westerse Reiki is de inwijdingsprocedure op een zeer systematische manier vastgelegd. In het traditionele Japanse Reiki was het de leraar toegestaan om daarin meer zijn eigen gevoel, zijn inspiratie te volgen. Echter: alleen bepaalde spiritueel ontwikkelde leerlingen konden leraar worden. Ook zijn er twaalf handposities, die niet in het Japanse systeem bestonden, toegevoegd in het Westerse systeem. In het Japanse systeem zijn er natuurlijk ook richtlijnen op dit gebied, maar de handen zijn min of meer vrij in het vinden van de plaatsen die energie daar van nodig hebben. De aangedane delen van het lichaam kunnen ook behandeld worden door strijkingen, door er naar te kijken en door er op te blazen, om zodoende de helende krachten van het lichaam in werking te zetten. Het kan ook zijn dat Hayashi of Takata eenvoudigweg de belangrijkheid van sommige dingen niet begrepen, of dat de traditionele methodes niet aangepast konden worden aan de Christelijke kijk op de zaak om Reiki in het Westen te geven (en dat het zo gegeven is zodat het in binnen de christelijke gemeenschap zou overleven). We kunnen ons de situatie vlak voor en tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog voorstellen. Het zou toen volstrekt onmogelijk geweest zijn om een Boeddhistisch georienteerd Japans systeem van genezing in Amerika te propaganderen zonder in enorme problemen te komen. Westerlingen zouden waarschijnlijk nooit van Reiki gehoord hebben als het op Hawaii in zijn originele vorm was onderwezen. In deze tijd is het niet langer noodzakelijk om Reiki af te schilderen als christelijk. Usui was geen christen. De Japanse Reiki methodes zouden nu eigenlijk opnieuw onderwezen moeten worden. Aan Westerse Reiki studenten is verteld dat alle Reiki-beoefenaars in Japan tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog gestorven zijn. Natuurlijk is dir een absurd sprookje. Het feit is dat de Usui Reiki Gakkai tijdens de oorlog vaak moest verhuizen. Omdat veel leden van de Usui Reiki Gakkai ook leden waren van de Keizerlijke Marine, moesten ze voorzichtig zijn om niet in de gaten gehouden en vervolgd te worden als zijnde lid van de vredesbeweging. Voor een tijd was het hoofdkantoor van de Usui Reiki Gakkai toen in Togo Jinja, een Shinto-tempel in Harajuku, Tokyo. Alleen al in Tokyo zijn er minstens vier verschillende "traditionele" Reiki stromingen. De voornaamste lijn staat nog steeds onder Mr.Kondo. Momenteel zijn er vijf verschillende Japanse Reiki stromingen bekend die door het hele land zijn verspreid. Elke stroming heeft z'n eigen "smaak" en identiteit. In Japan werken Boeddhistische monnikken met Reiki met ademhalings- en meditatietechnieken. Een tweede stroming combineert Reiki en macrobiotiek. Een derde stroming combineert Reiki en Shintoisme. En ga zo maar door. Voor zover bekend accepteert geen enkele traditionele Japanse Reiki-school buitenlanders of Japanners die in het buitenland leven. Het hoofdkantoor onder Mw. Koyama's leiding was niet geinteresseerd in een uitwisseling met vormen van Reiki buiten Japan (deze houding komt voort uit al de slechte ervaringen die ze met de buitenlanders hebben gehad). Wellicht dat hier in de toekomst verandering komt onder het leiderschap van Mr.Kondo. Er zijn nu duizenden Reiki-leraren in Japan die het Westerse Reiki systeem onderwijzen. Vreemd genoeg is iets wat teruggebracht is naar Japan beter ontvangen dan iets wat zijn oorsprong heeft in Japan en nooit het land heeft verlaten. Je kan het vergelijken met de macrobiotiek. Het Westerse Reiki zoals het wordt onderwezen in Japan, heeft in de loop der tijd veel New-Age elementen opgenomen door toedoen van de leraren, en is daardoor te vergelijken met Reiki in het Westen. Sommige leraren in Japan verbinden verschillende systemen aan elkaar. Anderen maken een mix van Westerse en Japanse systeems. Reiki past zich aan aan de mogelijkheden en interesses van
degenen die het beoefenen. De energie is overal hetzelfde, uit
welk land het ook komt, vanuit welke richting of filosofie afkomstig.
Reiki energie is en blijft Reiki energie zonder enige kenmerken
of beperkingen. Het traditionele Japanse Reiki ysteem is onderverdeeld in
verschillende graden. Om deze graden te leren gaat men vier keer per maand naar
zijn leraar, totdat de leraar vind dat de persoon door kan naar
de volgende graad. De symbolen werden in het eerste deel geleerd. In het tweede deel werd genezen op afstand en mentale genezing geleerd. Aanvullend werden de methodes, waarover Usui praatte in zijn handboek onderwezen. De volgende graad wordt Shinpiden
genoemd en wordt alleen door de leraar doorgegeven aan een paar
"uitverkoren" studenten. De Reiki Stamboom van de Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai En hier zijn de officiële opvolgers van Mikao Usui, die president zijn geweest van de Usui Reiki Ryoho. De zevende president, die daarmee de rechtmatige opvolger van Mikao Usui is, is sinds het begin van 1998 in funktie. Leraren van de Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai die hun eigen studenten hadden: Mr. Imaizumi, Mr. and Mw. Isoda, Mr. Shiki, Mr. Kaneko, Mw. Morisako, Mr. Chujiro Hayashi*, Mr. K. Ogawa**, Mr. Tsuboi. Verdere leraren waren/zijn: Mr. Eguchi, Mr. Hanai, Mr. Harada, Mr. Haraguchi, Mr. Hida, Mr. Ichinose, Mr. Ichiraizaki, Mr. Isobe, Mr. Jo, Mr. Kobayashi, Mr.Kosone, Mr. Matsuo, Mw. Nagano, Mw. Nagamine, Mw. Nakagawa, Mr. Nomura, Mr. F. Ogawa, Mr. Onizuka, Mr. Senju, Mr. Takayama, Mw. Tamura, Mw. Uchida, Mr. Usui and Mr. Yoshizaki. *Niet alleen de volledige Westerse Reiki lijn kan teruggevolgd worden naar Hayashi, maar ook de Australische lijn, die Enersence is genoemd. Deze lijn heeft zich ontwikkeld via Hayashi - Takeuchi - Takamori - Premaratna. Een andere student van Hayashi was ene Mr. Tatsumi. **Mr. F. Ogawa en Mr. T. Oishi leerden Reiki van Mr. K. Ogawa. Jammergenoeg weten we nog steeds erg weinig over zijn leven. Hij werd geboren op 15 augustus 1865 in de Japanse provincie Gifu. Hij trouwde Sadako Suzuki en had twee kinderen. Op 9 maart 1926 stierf hij in Fukuyama aan een hersenberoerte. Wanneer Usui precies Reiki begon te onderwijzen is nog steeds niet duidelijk. We nemen aan dat het ongeveer rond 1920 was, dus tijdens de laatste jaren van zijn leven. In 1921 opende hij een Reiki-praktijk in Harajuku (Tokyo), vlak bij de prachtige Meiji-tempel. Zijn faam ging als een wervelwind door het land, en hij verhuisde naar een groter huis in Nakano in 1925. Er staat op de gedenksteen van Usui's graf op de Saihoji-begraafplaats in Tokyo dat zijn zoon het familiebedrijf overnam, welke trouwens niets met Reiki te maken had. Tot nu toe is het niet duidelijk om welk soort bedrijf dit ging. Veel van wat zogenaamd bekend is over Usui, schijnt niet juist of niet volledig te zijn. Zo was Usui bijvoorbeeld geen christen en onderwees hij niet op de Doshisha Universiteit in Kyoto. Hij was daar ook geen student. De Universiteit van Chicago (waar hij gestudeerd zou hebben) weet ook niets over Usui. Fumio Ogawa, hoofd van een zijtak (Shizuoka) van de door Usui opgezette organisatie, heeft verteld dat Mikao Usui voor een tijdje de prive-secretaris was van de politicus Shimpei Goto. Shimpei Goto was secretaris van de spoorwegen, post, en van binnenlandse zaken. In 1922 werd Shimpei Goto burgermeester van Tokyo. We kunnen ook aannemen dat Usui een goede verstandhouding had met veel invloedrijke politici, en dat, vanwege deze funktie zijn buitelandse reizen, waarover gepraat wordt op de gedenksteen op zijn graf, zijn te verklaren. Tot nu toe is nog niet duidelijk wat precies zijn taken waren bij Mr. Goto. Zoals we al lazen van Usui: een gezond lichaam wordt gevolgd door een gezonde geest. Een reden waarom hij de vijf leefregels van de Meiji Keizer overnam is waarschijnlijk om de leden van zijn organisatie een degelijk ethische basis te geven. Hij had niet de bedoeling om met de Reiki principes zijn studenten te beheersen of een nieuwe religie te starten. Japanse keizers werden normaliter als Shinto-godheden gezien. Van de Meiji Keizer bijvoorbeeld wordt gezegd dat hij een duidelijke helderziende was en een uitstekende genezer. De Engelse missionaris Dr. John Bachelor, die jarenlang werkte onder de Ainu* op Hokkaido, schijnt automatische ee Rei-Ju (=initiatie) te hebben ontvangen toen hij een medaille van de keizer kreeg. Na deze initiatie begon hij spontaan de Ainu en andere mensen te helpen en te genezen, zonder hier ooit in te zijn getraind. *The Ainu zijn de oorspronkelijke bewoners van de Japanse eilandengordel; er is bijna niets bekend over het ontstaan van deze stam. Hun cultuur lijkt veel op die van de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Amerika. Shoufuku no hihoo.....................................

(Voor de) verbetering van lichaam en ziel Chosso ** Usui Mikao................................. De oprichter, Mikao Usui. *Het Japanse woord Reiki kan een aantal verschillende betekenissen hebben. Het bestaat uit twee karakters (kanji) : rei en ki. Rei kan betekenen: geest, ziel of spook. Ki kan betekenen: energie, atmosfeer, gedachte, hart, ziel, gevoel, stemming. Het woord Ryoho betekent, methode, behandeling of systeem in de zin van een helingsysteem. **De achternaam wordt in het Japans als eerste genoemd. ***De Japanse gassho-positie moet als volgt gezien worden: Zit op de vloer met gekruiste benen, of zit op je benen zonder ze te kruisen. Vouw je handen samen voor je hartchakra. Uiteraard kan je ook op een stoel gaan zitten of rechtop blijven staan. Zoals altijd is de mentale houding het belangrijkst.
In het algemeen gesproken zijn er vijf stromingen van de chinese Qi Gong, die tot nu toe de wereld veroverd hebben. Allen hebben hun oorsprong of in het Taoisme, Boeddhisme of Confusianisme, en onderscheiden zich door een passieve, passief-aktieve en aktieve stijl. In de chinese terminologie heten deze stijlen Yin, Yin/Yang en Yang. Yin heeft betrekking op de passieve, vrouwelijke kant van ons en onze omgeving, zoals bijvoorbeeld de maan. Het chinese letterteken voor Yin betekent "de schaduw-kant", en het letterteken voor Yang betekent "de heldere, lichte kant". Yang heeft betrekking op de mannelijke kant in ons en onze omgeving, zoals bijvoorbeeld de zon. Vermoedelijk de bekendste Qi Gong-stroming is die van de gevechtskunst. Deze bedient zich hoofdzakelijk van de lichaamskracht. Bedoeling is om het lichaam en de geest sterker te maken, zodat bij lichamelijke of geestelijke moeilijkheden er voldoende reserves zijn om zich te handhaven.Verder dient deze stroming als fysieke oefeningen voor monniken die het grootste gedeelte van hun leven in meditatie doorbrengen en daardoor niet voldoende aandacht en beweging aan hun lichaam schenken. De tweede categorie van Qi Gong-oefeningen, voor geneeskundige doeleinden, is in China zeer wijd verbreid, en is ook in Japan de laatste tijd populair geworden. Deze oefeningen strijken de ziektes glad en bevordert/herstelt de gezondheid van de beoefenaar doordat de levensenergie in het onderste gedeelte van de buikstreek verzameld wordt. Verder richt deze categorie zich erop, het leven van de beoefenaars te verlengen.Evenals de oefeningen van de gevechtskunst, behoort ook deze categorie tot de Yang-stromingen. De Confusiaanse Qi Gong behoort tot de Yin-stroming. Deze legt zich in hoofdzaak erop toe om de geest tot rust te krijgen, om deze zodoende ontvankelijk te maken voor morele ontwikkeling. Taoistische Qi Gong-oefeningen zijn zowel aktief als ook passief en omvatten een hele rij van ademhalingsoefeningen, massages, visualisaties en lichamelijke oefeningen die de beoefenaar helpt om het perfecte evenwicht van lichaam en ziel terug te vinden. De Boeddhistische Qi Gong-oefeningen worden bij de Yin-stromingen ingedeeld omdat het hoofddoel ligt op het verder verbreden van het innerlijk bewustzijn. Lichamelijk welzijn wordt als een welkom bijprodukt gezien, maar niet als doel op zich. Enkele Qi Gong-technieken van het Tibetaanse Boeddhisme helpen de beoefenaars om het lichaam door zuivere visualisaties te trainen, waarbij men zich absoluut niet beweegt! Zowel de taoistische als ook de boeddhistische Qi Gong-oefeningen richten zich er verder op om het lichaam sterker te maken waardoor de beoefenaars de spirituele verlichting kunnen overleven, welke een zeer schokkende ervaring kan zijn. De indische heilige Ramana Maharishi beschrijft de ervaring van verlichting als "een olifant die probeert een nietig bamboehutje binnen te gaan". Reiki is een boeddhistische variant van de Qi Gong, die door het Shintoisme is beinvloed. Het werd aan het eind van de vorige eeuw door Mikaomi Usui uit Kyoto in Japan opnieuw ontdekt. Hij was het, die deze kracht "Rei-Ki" noemde. In het Japans staat het letterteken "Rei" voor heilig, geest, geheim, gave, natuurgeest of onzichtbare geest, en het letterteken "Ki" betekent energie, natuur, talent en gevoel. Normaliter wordt Reiki vertaald als "Universele Levensenergie". Alhoewel Usui geen arts/dokter was in engere zin, was hij een arts/dokter in de ware zin van het woord. Hij was een man die zich tot levenstaak gesteld had om lichaam en geest van zijn studenten en patienten te helen. Zijn leerlingen noemde hem Usui Sensei, wat leraar of meester betekent. Sensei is iemand die zijn kennis en ervaring aan anderen doorgeeft. Met de term sensei wordt niet de spirituele meester bedoeld. Het levensverhaal van Usui wordt overschaduwd door onzekerheden, en veel verhalen zijn bijna van mythische aard. Veel van de zogenaamde "Japanse" informatie, die over hem en zijn systeem buiten Japan in omloop zijn, zijn of geheel en al overtrokken of niet fatsoenlijk onderzocht. Totdat wij er achter kwamen, was zijn werkelijke voornaam in het westen niet bekend, en het Kanji-teken voor Reiki werd zeer vaak verkeerd geschreven. Bijvoorbeeld: bijna alle Duitse en Engelse boeken over Reiki beweren dat Usui de leider/direkteur was van de Doshisha Universiteit in Kyoto, en dat hij later aan de Universiteit van Chicago gestudeerd heeft. Door de telefoon vertelden de archivarissen van beide Universiteiten ons, dat Mikao of Mikaomi Usui noch bij hen ingeschreven is geweest, noch daar geleerd heeft. In meerdere boeken wordt het oorspronkelijke Usui-Reiki-Systeem, dat Usui Shiki Ryoho heet, als "Usui Shiko Ryoho" aangeduid. Het Japanse woord "Shiki" betekent stijl, vorm of systeem. Het woord "Shiko" betekent urine! Het is waar dat Usui door de keizer van Japan voor zijn daden ge-eerd werd, maar in die tijd viel die eer te beurt aan duizenden burgers elk jaar. De meeste bronnen beweren dat Usui een christen was. Tot vandaag heb ik in zijn leer en zijn systeem voor natuurlijke heling geen enkel bewijs voor deze bewering gevonden. Mijn theorie is, dat het schijnbaar christelijke aspekt van Reiki in Amerika is bedacht, om daarmee Reiki acceptabel te maken voor de christelijke landen. Hoe dan ook; het kan zijn dat Usui op een gegeven ogenblik tijdens zijn innerlijk zoeken even met het christendom in aanraking is geweest. Usui zou in de achterbuurten gewerkt hebben om de bedelaars beter te maken - een zeer christelijke voorstelling. Ik geloof dat hij simpelweg de slachtoffers van de grote aardbeving van 1923 in Tokyo hielp. Ook als hij mogelijkerwijs het goede in het christendom zag, wil dat niet zeggen dat hij christen was in die zin zoals wij dat beleven. Gedurende de Meiji-periode voltrok zich in Japan, sociologisch gezien, een drastische opening tegenover het Westen en de westerse voorstellingen. Tot dan was Japan bijna kompleet van de rest van de wereld afgeschermd geweest. In die dagen was het voor vooruitstrevende intellectuelen "cool" om zich voor vreemde zaken te interesseren. De dorst naar westerse cultuur is in Japan nog steeds niet gestild. Pal naast de oeroude Shinto-schrijnen en kimono-winkels duiken nu fast-food restaurants en speelhallen op. Oppervlakkig beschouwd lijkt het erop dat Oost en West elkaar nu gevonden hebben, maar als men beter kijkt, bemerkt men dat ze slechts naast elkaar bestaan. De westerlingen denken bij Japan normaliter aan Zazen, kersenbloesem en soberheid, en als men Japan voor het eerst bezoekt, beleeft men een harde cultuurshock. Feit is, dat religie, en in zekere mate ook familie, door het zakelijkere bewustzijn vervangen is. Religiositeit is verworden tot een aangelegenheid pro forma. De meeste japanse families volgen tegenwoordig beide religies, zowel het boeddhisme als het shintoisme. Japans boeddhisme wordt in enkele traditioneel-boeddhistische landen niet als echt boeddhistisch geaccepteerd. Normaliter maken alle Japanners een shintoistische geboorte-ceremonie, een shintoistisch-christelijke bruiloft en een boeddhistische begravenis mee. Op deze wijze zijn dus alle goden tevreden.Naar westerse maatstaven is 70% van de japanse bevolking niet-religieus. De westerse Reiki-beweging De meeste westerse Reiki-leraren beschrijven Reiki als volgt: voor zijn dood gaf Usui zijn kennis aan meerdere personen door, en maakte hij de heer Chujiro Hayashi, Kommandeur van de keizerlijke marine van Japan, tot Reiki-grootmeester, met daarbij de verantwoording om alle andere Reiki-leraren te leiden. Hij was het, die Reiki van Japan naar de USA bracht, toen hij eind 1936 naar Hawaii ging, om een van zijn studenten, Hawayo H. Takata, te bezoeken. Mevrouw Takata was een "Nikkeijin" (zo worden de in het buitenland wonende Japanners genoemd), en werd op 24 december 1900 op het eiland Kauai geboren. We weten niet hoeveel mensen van Hayashi de titel Reiki-grootmeester gekregen hebben, maar het is zo, dat hij mevrouw Takata Reiki-meester heeft gemaakt toen hij Hawaii in 1938 nog eenmaal bezocht. Kort voor zijn dood, op 10 mei 1941, zou hij mevrouw Takata tot Reiki-grootmeester en hoofd van het Reiki-systeem benoemd hebben. Mevrouw Takata heeft, naar men zegt, medegedeeld dat er in 1941 slechts vijf levende Reiki-meesters waren onder zijn leiding. Zij heeft, tot haar dood op 12 december 1980, 22 mensen tot Reiki-meester benoemt, en de titel van grootmeester aan haar kleindochter Phyllis Lei Furumoto nagelaten. Na mevrouw Takata's dood heeft de westerse Reiki-beweging zich in twee terreinen verdeeld; de Reiki Alliance, die door Phyllis Furumoto opgericht werd, en de Radiance-techniek onder leiding van mevrouw Dr.Barbara Ray in de USA. Uit de Reiki Alliance zijn veel andere Reiki-takken voortgekomen, zoals de onafhankelijke Reiki-meesters, en de Osho-Reiki. De Japanse Reiki-beweging. Tot nu toe konden we slechts informatie krijgen over twee Reiki-stromingen in Japan, te weten een in Tokyo en de tweede in de Shizuoka-prefektuur in de staat Chubu, zuidelijk van Tokyo. Begin 1993 sprak mijn vrouw Chetna met een van de direkte afstammelingen van Usui, de vrouw van zijn kleinzoon, die ons vertelde dat haar schoonmoeder, Usui's dochter, een clausule in haar testament had nagelaten, waar in stond dat zijn naam niet meer in haar huis uitgesproken mocht worden! Toen deze vrouw trouwde, was Usui al dood. Verder wist ze niet veel over haar aangetrouwde grootvader, en ze scheen zich kwaad te maken over het feit dat wij haar herinnerd hadden aan een gevoelige plek in haar familiegeschiedenis. Later schreef ze ons dat het haar niet veroorlooft was om over deze kwestie te praten, en zij verzocht ons haar niet meer lastig te vallen, wat wij ook natuurlijk niet meer deden. Naar het schijnt was ze de laatste jaren vaker benaderd door personen die zich in de Reiki-geschiedenis interesseerden. Zij vertelde niet of het hier ging om vreemden of om Japanners die in het buitenland woonden. Enige tijd daarvoor had een van onze studenten ons het telefoonnummer gegeven van de Usui Shiki Ryoho in Tokyo. De persoon, met wie wij het gesprek voerden, verzocht ons haar naam niet te noemen. Zij zei dat ze mijn boek niet zou lezen en dat ze niets met Reiki van doen wilde hebben "wat uit het buitenland komt". Ze zei verder dat iemand, die in New York Reiki leerde, haar had aangesproken, maar dat ze een ontmoeting met deze persoon had geweigerd. Toch gaf ze ons vriendelijk de volgende informatie over Usui: Mikaomi Usui werd op 15 augustus 1862 in het dorp Yago in het Yamagata-district van het Gifu-prefektuur in Zuid-Japan geboren. Hij was met Sadako Suzuki getrouwd en had twee kinderen. Hij stierf op 9 maart 1926 aan een hersenbloeding, nadat hij er al twee overleefd had, op de leeftijd van 61 jaar. Hij is begraven in de Saihoji-Tempel, een boeddhistische tempel in een buitenwijk van Tokyo. Zijn vrouw en zijn zoon zijn daar eveneens begraven. Toen wij in kontakt kwamen met de tempel, kwamen we erachter dat het niet om een Zen-Tempel ging, zoals in het westen tot nu toe wordt aangenomen, maar dat deze tempel behoort bij het "Main-stream boeddhisme". Wat wij te weten kwamen door het grafopschrift van Usui, was, dat hij ongeveer 2000 mensen in Reiki onderwezen heeft. In veel delen van het land waren Reiki-centra en Reiki-klinieken. Er werden regelmatig workshops door Usui en zijn bekendste leerlingen gehouden. De volgende informatie kregen we van de heer Tsutomu Oishi, een heer van eind 60 uit Shizuko City. Hij ontving helende sessies van mevrouw Shizuko Akimoto in haar kliniek in Tokyo. Zij had de leraar-graad van ons geleerd en was zich niet van het feit bewust dat de heer Oishi ongeveer 40 jaar daarvoor Reiki had geleerd van een van Usui's bekendste leerlingen. De moeder van de heer Oishi had de zogenoemde Middengraad (tweede graad?) van Reiki verworven toen hij nog een klein kind was. Hij heeft haar daarover vaak bevraagd, maar ze had steeds hem geantwoord dat ze had beloofd om daar met niemand over te praten. De broer van de heer Oishi had kinderverlamming, en zijn moeder behandelde hem regelmatig, totdat hij volkomen genezen was. Aangemoedigd door dit succes trad ze naar buiten en behandelde ze alle aan polio-lijdende kinderen in haar buurt. In de afgelopen 30 jaren had Reiki in het leven van de heer Oishi blijkbaar geen grote rol meer gespeeld. Pas de laatste tijd heeft hij zich daarover weer aan het denken gezet. Toen hij in augustus 1995 mevrouw Akimoto leerde kennen, en niet wist dat zij een Reiki-therapeut was, zei hij plotseling tijdens een behandeling tegen haar: "weet u, er is een helings-techniek, die Reiki heet...". Mevrouw Akimoto was zeer opgewonden, omdat velen van ons de geschiedenis van Reiki al vele jaren onderzoeken, zonder erg succesvol te zijn. Tijdens de verdere behandelingen vertelde heer Oishi haar alles wat hij over Usui en het reiki-systeem in Shizuoka wist. Ik ben zorgvuldig door de informatie gegaan, en wat nu volgt is een bloemlezing. Heer Oishi was zo vriendelijk om de foto van Usui ter beschikking te stellen. De foto werd gemaakt toen Usui een workshop in Shizuoka leidde. De precieze datum is niet bekend. Vanaf deze plek wil ik graag uit het diepste van mijn hart heer Oishi danken voor zijn ruimdenkendheid, dat hij zijn kennis met ons gedeeld heeft, en dat hij de foto van Usui voor iedereen ter beschikking stelt. Hier dus het verhaal: oorspronkelijk runde Usui een bedrijf, dat mislukte, en hij bleef achter met veel schulden en de vraag wat voor hem, buiten materieel voordeel, nog belangrijk was. Usui had de gewoonte om bij de waterval van de berg Kurama te mediteren. Op een dag had hij daar een "plotseling begrijpen", een "inzicht in een hogere orde" (Satori). Enige tijd na deze ervaring op de berg Kurama richtte Usui de Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai op. Gedurende Usui's leven bestuurde ene heer Kozo Ogawa het Reiki-centrum in Shizuoka. Heer Ogawa verkocht schooluniformen en reisde binnen de Shizuoka-prefektuur van de ene school naar de anderen. Zodra hij een ziek kind aantrof, genas hij deze met Reiki. Hij was een van die zeldzame helers die, zoals mijn vrouw Chetna, steeds weten hoeveel behandelingen nodig zijn om een bepaalde ziekte te genezen. In het geval van heer Oishi volstonden zes zittingen om hem van zijn oogproblemen te verlossen. Tijdens de behandeling zag het er niet uit dat er dramatische veranderingen waren, maar daarna bemerkte heer Oishi plotseling dat zijn problemen afgenomen waren. Usui besefte heer Ogawa's talent voor heling en waardeerde hem altijd zeer. Usui verleende hem de hoogste rang in de organisatie. Hij en heer Ogawa hadden de gewoonte om hun leerlingen opgeladen kristallen kogels te geven. Deze kristalkogels werden direkt op het ziekgeworden lichaamsdeel van de patienten gelegd, en hielpen daarbij het lichaam om de balans terug te vinden.Na de inwijdingen ontvingen alle leerlingen ook een handboek dat verklaarde wat Reiki was, en dat voorbeelden leverde van ziektesymptomen en hun behandeling. In de Reiki-zittingen zaten de deelnemers steeds op de knien( traditionele Japanse stijl) met voor de borst gevouwen handen in "Gassho" of "Namaste"-houding. Dan raakte de Reiki-leraar de gevouwen handen van de leerlingen aan en schatte het helingstalent in en spaarde zijn energie.Van heer Oishi werd gezegd dat zijn helingstalent buitengewoon was. In zijn jonge jaren nam hij meerdere malen deel aan heer Ogawa's Reiki-oefeningsontmoetingen. Bij aanvang van elke ontmoeting reciteerde heer Ogawa voor de deelnemers de vijf Reiki-principes. Het schijnt dat heer Ogawa gezegd heeft dat Usui veelvuldig met veel respect over de Meiji-keizer van Japan heeft gesproken. Heer Ogawa opende een Reiki-kliniek in Shizuoka City, waar hij Reiki-behandelingen aanbood en zijn leerlingen inwijdde in Reiki. Heer Ogawa was kinderloos, en toen hij te oud werd om zijn kliniek verder te runnen, verzocht hij heer Oishi, deze over te nemen. Heer Oishi weigerde dit, nadat iemand anders hem verteld had dat, door anderen te helen, zijn eigen levensenergie zou verminderen. Een van heer Ogawa's familieleden, heer Fumio Ogawa, die zich om de oude man bekommerde, leeft nu nog en heeft onlangs mevrouw Akimoto en daarmee ons allen op groothartige wijze de volgende informatie toevertrouwd: Usui richtte de Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkei (Usui Reiki Helings
Genootschap) op, met de hoofdzetel in Tokyo. Hij was zelf de
eerste president. De tweede president was ene heer Taketomi,
de derde ene heer Watanabe, de vierde ene heer Wanami, en de
zesde is nu ene mevrouw Koyama. Tegen een minimale lidmaatschapsvergoeding
worden nog steeds nieuwe leden opgenomen. De naam van de vijfde
president is uit heer Ogawa's herinnering ontvallen, maar ik
ben er zeker van dat verdere onderzoeken vruchtbaar zullen zijn. Concluderend De hele Reiki-wereld is in beroering. De ene school accepteert de andere school niet als echt of oorspronkelijk, en de situatie tussen Reiki-leraren zowel in Amerika als ook in Europa kan men als oorlog aanduiden. Als zou Reiki tot een land behoren, een school, een denkbeeld volgen, of behoren aan een enkeling. Zover het mij betreft, is alles EEN. Naar mijn overtuiging kan vooral in deze tijd een egocentrische, sectarische weg , alleen tot een ramp leiden. Met onze bekrompenheid kunnen we al het mooie in het leven, en ook Reiki, te gronde richten. De wens naar afbakening ontstaat steeds door de wens van het
ego, zichzelf groter en beter dan de ander te zien. Om ons eraan
te herinneren, dat het universum met al zijn bloemen en doornen
EEN is, wil ik graag het begin van de Isha Oepanishad citeren: Kort nadat Usui in Japan gestorven was, bouwde de Japanse Usui Shiki Ryoho voor hem een gedenkteken in de Saihoji-tempel in Bezirk Toyotama te Tokyo.Na een jaar zoeken vonden we uiteindelijk het graf, en ik vloog naar Tokyo, om Usui mijn respect te betuigen. De routebeschrijving, die we van de Saihoji-tempel kregen, luidde: "stap uit bij het station Shinkoen, blijf links houden, en ga naar het eerste verkeerslicht. Daar vind je een politiepost, maar doe daar geen navraag, want de politie weet niet waar we te vinden zijn. Ga door de straat naar de drankmarkt en vraag daar naar de weg". Ik was in een allerbeste stemming, want dit klonk werkelijk naar Zen! Ik had twee Japanse vrienden ontmoet, eveneens Reiki-leraren, die mij begeleidden. Voor de grap vroegen we de weg bij de politie, en natuurlijk stuurden ze ons in de verkeerde richting. Het was 20 september 1994, de hemel was bewolkt en grauw. De dienstdoende monnik zei ons waar wij het graf konden vinden, en we namen reukwerk en water mee voor het gangbare reinigingsritueel. Nadat we het reukwerk opgebrand en de grafsteen gereinigd hadden, zette ik me neer om te mediteren. Zodra ik het Reiki-meestersymbool gebruikte, brak de zon met alle macht door de wolken en vervulde me met haar licht. Precies hetzelfde ondervondt mijn vrouw toen zij een jaar later voor de eerste keer Usui's graf bezocht. Het opschrift, dat in het oud-Japans op het gedenkteken stond, werd door Masano Kobayashi, de moeder van mijn vrouw, in modern-Japans vertaald. De vertaling van Japans in het Engels verzorgden mijn vrouw en ik.
"Wie ernstig leert en vol overgave aan zichzelf werkt, om zijn lichaam en zijn geest te verbeteren en om een beter mens te worden, is een "mens van grote geest". De mensen die deze grote geest voor het welzijn van de maatschappij gebruiken, om vele mensen de juiste weg te wijzen en om goed te doen, noemt men "leraren". Een van deze leraren was Usui. Hij leerde mensen het Reiki van het universum. Talloze mensen kwamen tot hem en verzochten hem, hun de grote weg van Reiki bij te brengen en om hen te helen. Zijn voornaam is Mikaomi, zijn andere naam ( in Japan kregen vroeger leerlingen een nieuwe naam van hun leermeester) is Gyoho (kan men ook als Kyoho uitspreken). Hij werd in het dorp Yago geboren, in Bezirk Yamagata van de Gifu-prefektuur, op 15 augustus. Hij leerde veel en beschikte over schitterende talenten. Als volwassene bereisde hij meerdere westelijke landen zoals China, om daar te studeren. Alhoewel hij een prachtig mens was met buitengewone gaven, had hij veel pech. Maar hij gaf niet op en leerde volhardend verder. Op een dag ging hij naar de berg Kurama om zich voor meditatie terug te trekken, en vastte 21 dagen lang. Na deze 21 dagen voelde hij de grote Reiki-energie in zich, en sindsdien leerde hij alles over het Reiki-systeem. Allereerst gebruikte hij Reiki voor zichzelf, daarna probeerde hij het bij zijn familie, en daar het bij de verschillende kwalen goed aansloeg, besloot hij om het ook met vele anderen te delen. Om Reiki bekend en voor het publiek toegankelijk te maken, opende hij een kliniek in Harajuka, Aoyama in Tokyo, in april van het 10de jaar van de Taisho-tijd (1921). Hij leidde workshops en hield Reiki-helingzittingen voor vele mensen. De mensen moesten voor zijn huis in de rij staan om behandelt te worden. In september van het twaalfde jaar van de Taisho-tijd (1923) schokte de verwoestende Kanto-aardbeving Tokyo. Duizenden werden gedood, gewond en ziek. Usui's hart werd ernstig, en vol verdriet begon hij in de hele stad de talrijke slachtoffers van de aardbeving te helen. Al snel werd zijn kliniek te klein, zodat hij in februari van het veertiende jaar van de Taisho-tijd, uit de stad naar Nakano trok, waar hij een nieuwe kliniek bouwde. Zijn roem verbreidde zich snel over heel Japan, en hij werd in veel kleine dorpen van het land uitgenodigd. Eenmaal reisde hij naar Kure, een andere keer naar de Hiroshima-prefektuur en naar Fukuyama. Bij zijn verblijf in Fukuyama werd hij ziek en stierf op de leeftijd van 62 jaar op 9 maart in het vijftiende jaar van de Taisho-tijd (1926). De naam van zijn vrouw was Sadako, haar meisjesnaam was Suzuki. Ze hadden een zoon en een dochter. De zoon, Fuji Usui, nam de familieonderneming over na Usui's dood. Usui was zeer warmhartig, eenvoudig en ootmoedig, zijn lichaam was gezond en goed geproportioneerd. Hij schepte nooit op en droeg altijd een glimlach op de lippen, maar zodra hij problemen had, liet hij blijken waar hij mee zat. Hij was een zeer voorzichtig mens. In velerlei opzicht was hij een zeer getalenteerde ziel. Hij las graag en beschikte over omvangrijke kennis op het gebied van de psychologie, medicatie, waarzeggerij en theologie van alle religies. Zijn levenslange gewoonte en ervaring om te leren, en het verzamelen van informatie, hebben hem wellicht geholpen, Reiki te ontvangen en te begrijpen.Het hoofddoel van Reiki is niet uitsluitend het helen van ziektes, maar ook de versterking van het beschikbare natuurlijke talent, de balans van de geest, de gezondheid van het lichaam en daarmee het verkrijgen van geluk. Om anderen hiermee vrtrouwd te maken, moest men de vijf principes van de Meiji-keizer volgen, en ze diep in het hart verinnerlijken. Zeg deze vijf principes elke morgen en elke avond op: 1) Erger je vandaag niet Het uiteindelijke doel is, de oeroude geheime methode te begrijpen, zoals men naar geluk verlangt, en zo een algemeen geldige helingsmethode tegen veel kwalen te ontdekken. Wanneer men deze schitterende principes volgt, zal men de rustige geest van de oude wijzen verkrijgen. Om het Reiki-systeem te kunnen verspreiden, is het belangrijk, om op een plek te beginnen die dichtbij je ligt; begin niet met iets, zoals filosofie of logica, dat misschien ver van je ligt. Wees stil, en zit elke morgen en elke avond met voor de borst gevouwen handen in de "Gassho" of "Namaste"-houding. Volg de schitterende principes op, wees onberispelijk en rustig. Werk aan je hart, en breng zaken vanuit je rustige zelf naar buiten. Daar Reiki diep in jezelf begint, kan iedereen Reiki uitoefenen. De wereld verandert snel, filosofien veranderen, maar als Reiki over de hele wereld verspreid kan worden, zal het de harten van de mensen en de moraal van de maatschappij treffen. Het zal vele, vele mensen daarbij helpen, niet alleen ziektes te genezen, maar ook de aarde. Meer dan 2000 mensen leerde Reiki van Usui. Menigeen leerde Reiki van zijn ervaren leerlingen, zodat vele mensen, die verweg woonden, eveneens Reiki leren konden. Ook nu nog, na Usui's dood, zal Reiki zich nog lang verder verbreiden. Het is een zegen, van hem Reiki geleerd te hebben, zijn "grote" ervaren te hebben, en bekwaam te zijn om het door te geven. Velen van Usui's leerlingen stroomde naar hier, om dit gedenkteken op de begraafplaats van de Saihoji-tempel in Bezirk Toyotama te bouwen. Ik werd verzocht deze woorden te schrijven, zodat zijn schitterend werk verdergaat. Ik waardeer zijn werk ten zeerste, en ik wil al zijn leerlingen graag zeggen, dat ik mij geeerd voel, voor deze opgave uitgezocht te zijn. Ik wense dat veel mensen begrijpen, welk een indrukwekkende dienst Usui de wereld, voor de jaren die nog komen gaan, bewezen heeft." Geschreven door, "ju-san-i kun-san-tou ko-yon-kyu" Juzaburo Gyuda ook wel als Ushida uitgesproken. In het tweede jaar van Showa (1927), February Zo'n honderd jaar geleden zocht Mikao Usui de kennis naar Verlichting. Het meeste dat we van hem weten komt uit een paar westerse boeken. Het verhaal gaat meestal over het feit dat Mikao Usui een christen was die in de oosterse geschriften zocht, omdat hij niet in de christelijke teksten kon vinden hoe Jezus zijn wonderen en genezingen verrichtte. Hij zou zelfs naar de universiteit van Chicago zijn gegaan in zijn zoektocht, daarom wordt hij Dr.Usui genoemd. De universiteit van Chicago heeft echter geen aantoonbaar bewijs dat hij daar zou zijn afgestudeerd, noch van het feit dat hij ooit heeft gestudeerd aan deze universiteit. Ik heb de inzichten van ontelbare mensen bijeen gebracht. Dit heeft me ertoe gebracht, in mijzelf en voor mijzelf te vragen naar de Waarheid. Ook heb ik vele leraren, meesters, genezers en sjamanen bezocht in een veelheid aan workshops, lessen en seminars. Ik heb klassen bezocht in alle windstreken, van hotels in New York City, tot in de jungle van Yucatan. Vanuit mijn ontdekkingsreis, die tegelijkertijd een reis was voor zelfgenezing, wil ik verslag doen van wat mijn persoonlijke waarheid is over Reiki, genezing en Mikao Usui. De zoektocht van Mikao duurde zijn hele leven. Omdat hij de kennis over genezing niet kon vinden in vertalingen van de Sutra's, de leringen van Boeddha, ging hij op zoek naar de originele versie. Hierin zou de wijsheid over genezen en de manier waarop dit te doen, te vinden zijn. Tot die tijd was de aarde omgeven geweest door donkere, zware energie, zodat deze universele begrippen ontoegankelijk waren voor wie dan ook. Niemand zou de codes hebben kunnen ontcijferen zodat ook niemand de kracht zou hebben kunnen misbruiken. Deze Sutra's, oude geschriften in het Sanskriet, lagen te wachten tot de tijd zou komen dat de juiste persoon met zuivere intenties de geheimen zou onthullen. Mikao was een boeddhistische monnik. Maar de Sutra's werden niet uitgeleend aan een ander land, hoe goed de intenties van de student ook waren! Daarom leidde zijn zoektocht Usui naar India, Mongolie en Tibet om Sanskriet te leren en om met de Tibetaanse monniken te studeren. Daarna heeft hij veel tijd doorgebracht met het lezen van deze eerbiedwaardige manuscripten. De Heilige Wetten werden hem onthuld, net zoals wanneer wij in de bijbel lezen en voelen dat we in contact zijn met de Waarheid. Universele verborgen kennis in de Sutra's sloot aan bij de kennis die Dr.Usui al had uit vorige levens. Hij was ooit een Tibetaanse monnik geweest in een vorig leven. Mikao Usui vond zijn antwoorden. Maar wijsheid en kennis zonder de sleutel om de kracht te ontsluiten is als water scheppen in een vergiet. Je weet dat je iets hebt gevonden maar je kunt er geen grip op krijgen. Om de volledige kennis over de genezende kracht, transformatie en de manifestatie daarvan te kunnen bewerkstelligen, moest hij een bewustzijnsverruimende ervaring ondergaan. Honderd jaar geleden was alleen in de boeddhistische Sutra's nog de informatie te vinden over healing/genezing en spirituele geheimen. Nadat Usui dezelfde documenten had gelezen als Jezus dat 1900 jaar eerder had gedaan, besefte hij de noodzaak van bewustzijns-verandering om zodoende "bezield" te worden met de helende energie. Hij voelde en wist dat hij naar Japan terug moest keren om een berg te beklimmen. Bergen zijn namelijk Heilig in Japan. Op die berg mediteerde en vastte hij 21 dagen. Na deze 21 dagen werd hij letterlijk getroffen door de bliksem op de plaats van zijn derde oog. Toen hij hierdoor zijn bewustzijn verloor, openbaarde zich de helende energie van Moeder-Vader God, waarnaar hij al die tijd had gezocht. Toen hij weer bijkwam, merkte hij dat de genezende kracht uit zijn handen straalde. In zijn bewusteloosheid werd hem duidelijk gemaakt dat hij deze kracht van aarde, vuur, water en lucht door middel van inwijdingen door kon geven aan anderen. Dit waren dezelfde inwijdingen die Jezus aan zijn discipelen gaf. Op deze manier was Jezus in staat om eenvoudige vissers in een korte tijd (alleen Marcus was belastingophaler en Lucas was arts) op te leiden tot genezers met kennis van het bovennatuurlijke. Rampspoed en beproevingen die hun voorouders moesten ondergaan tijdens hun zoektocht naar Verlichting in het oude Egypte, waren niet langer nodig. Jezus liet ons de weg zien zodat iedereen het Goddelijke Bewustzijn kan bereiken, een weg die afrekent met het rad van wedergeboorte en de dood zelf. Na deze gebeurtenis begon Mikao Usui met zijn opdracht om deze energie en kennis uit te dragen. Hij initieerde andere mannen, hij noemde hen Reiki-masters. (Reiki=energie) Deze Reiki-masters hadden net als de alchemisten de macht over de elementen aarde, lucht, vuur en water. Dit zijn de bouwstenen waaruit wij zijn opgebouwd, het is de eigenschap van het hologram dat alles met elkaar in verbinding staat. De kracht die deze elementen samen brengt, vormt een variatie op een thema in ons holografische universum. Een eenvoudig voorbeeld hiervan is het verschijnsel dat aarde en lucht beiden water kunnen vasthouden, maar op verschillende manieren. De elementen werken multidimensioneel, d.w.z. ze bestaan hier op aarde, op andere planeten en op andere bewust-zijnsniveaus, ze bevatten alle vier een genezende "straal". De japanse Reiki-masters (meesters over de Chi) waren in staat om wonderen te verrichten, want ze konden werken aan alle aspecten van het menselijk lichaam en ook die van de subtielere lichamen. Hawayo Takata, een Japans/Amerikaanse vrouw, die in Hawaii woonde, hoorde van deze wonderen. Zij leed aan kanker en nam de gok om genezen te worden in Japan. Zij werd genezen door de Reiki-behandelingen. Ze was heel erg dankbaar en vroeg onophoudelijk om ook te mogen worden ingewijd in de Reikikracht. Dr.Chujiro Hayashi deed dit uiteindelijk. Als men bedenkt dat dit gebeurde in 1930 en dat mevrouw Takata geen man was, dan kan men zich toch voorstellen dat hij haar niet alles leerde? Zelfs vandaag de dag zou een vrouw niet alles worden verteld en geleerd. Hier komt nog bij dat het een oosterse traditie is dat de Meester niet alles aan zijn student doorgeeft. Mevrouw Takata werd ingewijd in Reiki maar haar werden alleen de symbolen en inwijdingen voor het element "aarde" geleerd. Aarde is een belangrijke kracht, want aarding is noodzakelijk bij alle heling. Mevrouw Takata dacht, om welke reden dan ook, dat haar alles was geleerd en verteld. Toen mevrouw Takata terug kwam in Hawaii, begon ze mensen te behandelen met Reiki door handoplegging. Ze was erg bekwaam en werd al snel bekend. Ze begon ook geld te vragen voor de behandelingen, net zoals de Japanse mannen. Al snel begonnen mensen mevrouw Takata te vragen om ook te worden ingewijd en zo Reiki door te kunnen geven aan anderen. Ze vond dat de Amerikanen nog niet klaar waren om alle kracht te ontvangen die ze had doorgekregen van Dr.Hayashi, waarschijnlijk had ze daar gelijk in! Mevrouw Takata loste haar probleem op door simpelweg de helft van de inwijdingsprocedure weg te laten en door een symbool te schrappen voor elk van de drie Reiki inwijdingen. Ook was zij het, die besloot om 10.000 dollar te vragen voor Reiki-masterschap, een aardige som geld voor die tijd en ook zelfs nu nog. Dit bedrag moest al te gretige studenten afschrikken. Haar bedoeling was om Reiki te beschermen en het tegelijkertijd toegankelijk te maken. Mevrouw Takata heeft 22 Reiki-masters opgeleid in haar leven. Het bewijs van mijn verhaal ligt in het feit dat niet een van deze masters, zelfs haar eigen kleindochter Phyllis niet, in staat is om dezelfde wonderen te verrichten als Mikao Usui of mevrouw Takata zelf. Natuurlijk zijn er opzienbare genezingen gebeurd, maar niet als regel. Alle Reiki-masters voelen en weten dit, ze weten ook allemaal dat er "iets mist". Om de volledige kennis en kracht terug te vinden van de elementaire stralen, kunnen we niet terug gaan naar Japan. Er is niemand meer over van de Reiki-masters die door Mikao Usui zelf zijn ingewijd. ORIGIN: It is said that Traditional Reiki holds true to what was taught by Takata. Most Reiki Alliance Masters teach Traditional Reiki and some independants follow this tradition. DEGREES or Levels: 3 degrees are taught. Traditional Reiki is usually taught orally with little or no notes given. First Degree: 4 attunements; teaches the history, percepts, a series of hand positions and disease cause/effect and treatment. Second Degree: one or two attunements; teaches 3 symbols (names, meanings and how to use them), a distance/absentee healing technique and a mental/emotional balancing technique. Mastership Degree: 1 attunement; teaches 1 additional symbol (name, meaning and how to use), how to do first, second and master initiations, a breath empowerment technique and other things. There are also numerous Independent Reiki Masters who teach this tradition. 2. Raku Kei Reiki ORIGIN: It is believed that Iris Ishikuro (one of Takata's students) added much of what is taught in Raku Kei. Raku Kei is also sometimes referred to as "The way of the Fire Dragon". Raku is the vertical flow of energy and Kei is the horizontal flow of energy in the body. DEGREES or Levels: 4 degrees. First and Second Degree: taught as one class; 2 attunements; teaches a different history about a man named Rolf Jensen who took reiki from Dr. Usui, percepts, hand positions, disease and treatment with reiki, uses Master Frequency plates (with Antahkarana symbol inside) to switch the polarity of the body to left giving/right receiving (Robertson claims Takata and Ishikuro had and used these plates), 3 traditional symbols are taught, plus 1 additional symbol, a distance healing technique and 3 Kanji hand positions (Mudras). Third Degree is called Reiki Sensei: 1 attunement; requires that the student buy 1 Master Frequency plate; teaches deer exercises, attunements to all 3 levels of Reiki, plus a white light initiation, a breathing technique called "Breath of the Fire Dragon", 2 additional symbols, the water ceremony, use of herbs and minerals, Reiki Master Spinal Therapy. Master/Teacher Degree is a called a Certified Reiki Sensei: It is required that the student have 3 large Master Frequency Plates before taking class. This Degree is for those students who want to be Center Certified it is basically a review of the Third Degree. Every student must show proficiency in the Reiki attunement procedures, know all the symbols and must be dedicated to healing the planet. The Class requires a contractual agreement with the American Reiki Master Association. If you have received the symbol for white light (also called the Johrei symbol) its' origin is in the Religion Johrei. This is the symbol for their GOD, followers of the religion enlarge it an put it on the wall over their alter. Look at it closely and you will notice that the upper half is the same as the Usui Master symbol. The original version of this symbol is hand written in Japanese Kanji in a stylized script, the other version (called the Johre symbol) is printed in Diane Stein's "Essential Reiki" is a stylized version and is not taught in Raku Kei Reiki; neither are Reiki symbols. Seichem ORIGIN: Kathleen took the original Raku Kei Reiki system that she learned, changed the attunement process, left out some information, and added several symbols. Originally she taught this system as just plain Reiki which caused much confusion between Reiki practitioners. Now she teaches Tera-Mai® Seichem Reiki and Tera-Mai® which includes energy activations of Sakara, Angeliclight and Sophi-el. Kathleen says that reiki is very Earthy. Tera-Mai® Seichem is a combination of some Raku Kei, some Seichim, some from no other reiki system and a lot of her own understandings. Her attunements are very different from Traditional Usui. She claims that a great being gave her the information to change the attunements and 3 new/old symbols. What we have found is that the energy of Tera-Mai® is indeed very earthy, mainly because of the symbols/attunement method she added. Traditional Usui is a much more subtle vibration (a higher frequency). DEGREES or Levels: 3 degrees. First Degree: 1 initiation; teaches the history, percepts, hand positions. Second Degree: 1 initiation; teaches the 3 traditional symbols, 2 symbols from the great being and other symbols (names, meaning and usage), distance/absentee healing. Mastership: 1 initiation, a water ceremony, and a YOD initiation; teaches 1 traditional, 1 YOD and 1 symbol from the great being which are initiatory symbols, 2 sealing symbols, and other symbols, her attunement method to First, Second and Master Degrees, a gold, blue and rainbow "Breath of the Fire Dragon" technique, the water ceremony and another initiation called the YOD initiation which is said to connect one with the energies of the Arc of the Covenant. Other symbols are given to Masters that have been channeled by her students. There are numerous Independent Reiki Masters who teach this tradition. 4. Usui/Tibetan Reiki William has also taken Reiki from Diane McCumber (Raku Kei lineage), Marlene Schilke, Beth Gray, Harry Kuboi, Bethel Phaigh and Phyllis Furumoto. ORIGIN: Rand teaches what he calls Usui/Tibetan Reiki which is a combination of Traditional, Raku Kei and his own understandings. DEGREES and Levels: 4 degrees: First and Second Degree: taught together in one class: 2 attunements; teaches the history, percepts, hand positions, 3 traditional symbols (names, meanings and use), and a distance healing technique. Advanced Reiki Training (ART): 1 attunement: teaches 1 additional traditional symbol (meaning and usage), a different possible history of Reiki, Reiki Meditation, The Reiki Grid, Attunement exercise,and Psychic Surgery. Master/Teacher Degree: 1 attunement: teaches about the healing crisis, Reiki III Meditation (using microcosmic orbit), 2 Tibetan initiatory symbols, attunement exercise, attunement methods (Raku Kei like) to First, Second, ART and Master/Teacher plus a Healing Attunement, Distance and self attunement; Violet Breath Technique, gives 4 variations of the Antahkarana symbol with description and usage. The word karuna comes from the Buddhist tradition and means "compassionate action". Karuna Reiki® was born from Tera-Mai® (Kathleen Milner's reiki system). However the energy of Karuna Reiki® is heart oriented (compassionate). DEGREES or Levels: 2 levels: Both levels are taught in one class by the Center: 2 attunements: The only difference between the levels are the symbols that are taught, 9 symbols originally from Tera Mai® plus 1 traditional and 2 Tibetan symbols (names, meanings, usage) are given, 2 attunements, Violet Breath, chanting, and meditation are included. Seichim or Seichem or Sekhem ORIGIN: Originally Patrick Ziegler was guided to add additional symbols and to change the name from Reiki to Seichim. Some people say that Seichim has its'origins in Egypt and perhaps after adding to the original system it could be said that some of the information contained within Seichim came from Egypt. However the original roots of this system were in Japan with Dr. Usui. We have found 4 distinct versions of Seichim Reiki. The first one is very close to the Traditional Usui Reiki (it is the original version with lineage back to Patrick)with the addition of facets (or levels or degrees) 4 and 5. First Facet (Degree) is taught like traditional Usui Reiki: 4 attunements. Second Facet (Degree) has 2 attunements; teaches 3 traditional symbols and several variations on the power symbol, distance healing and mental/emotional balancing. Master Facet (Degree): 1 attunement; 1 symbol, teaches how to attune to 3 levels. Fourth Facet (Degree) 1 attunement; additional symbols, attunements for animals and inanimate objects. Fifth Facet (Degree) 1 attunement; additional symbols, personal empowerment attunement. The second one has a strong Egyptian feel (the lineage on this one is Patrick - Phoenix Summerfield - Marsha Burack...) it has 2 facets with 11 steps to each facet, and 4 levels. Each facet has initiations and contains references to Sekhmet. You start as a Reiki II, the First Level is called Seichem Adept; 2 initiations; Second Level is called Seichem Master/Teacher; 1 initiation, teaches 9 symbols, how to do the initiations and other information. The third one is Tibetan in feel (the lineage is Curtis Hakeem...) and has 7 levels with new symbols and understandings at each level. The first level, 1 initiation, hand positions; Second Level, 1 initiation, 3 symbols (names, meanings and use, and a distance or absentee healing technique; Third Level, 1 initiation, 13 symbols 7 hot, and 6 cold. The symbols are letters and names of the Tibetan alphabet. A treatment is also taught utilizing all 13 symbols it is not hands-on, rather for about 45 minutes the person stands while the Seichim Practitioner dances the symbols into the aura. During the process one feels very much like they are merging with the earth. The fourth one is Seichim as taught by Patrick today. It attunes one to Living Light energy which moves in a figure eight rather than a spiral as in Reiki. The attunement process is done during meditation where the high heart chakra is opened and connected with Earth and Universal energies. The feeling of energy during the attunement is very etherial, with a flavor similar to Reiki/Radiance. It is said that with Seichim one can direct and control the intensity of the energy. We have not noticed a great difference between the energy of Seichim and Reiki, both are gentle loving energies, which help the body to regain balance and reconnects the initiate with Source/Creator/God.There are numerous Independent Reiki Masters who teach the variations of Seichim.
7. Tibetan Reiki LINEAGE: Tschen Li, Ralph White, Craig Ellis... ORIGIN: This lineage claims that Tschen Li taught Dr. Usui and Ralph White brought Reiki to the US. DEGREES or Levels: There are at least 3 distinct ways that Tibetan Reiki is taught. The first one is usually taught First, through Mastership in one course: 1 attunement; teaches 4 traditional symbols and 15 non-traditional symbols. The symbols in this course are not Tibetan in nature or form and they do not have Tibetan names. Some of them are Egyptian in form and name, some just archetypal symbols. Teaches how to attune to the system, breathing techniques which are essentially yogic breathing, and cabalistic information. The second one teaches 5 levels. Training is said to include: the Tibetan concept of the five elements in relation to initiation, purification and healing; 25 symbols, Meridian Therapy, information on the energetic body including 8 wondrous channels, micro/ macrocosmic orbit, psychic pathways and etheric template expansion; distant healing, psychic surgery, trauma release, self-empowerment, and clearing the emotional body; 1 attunement at each level. The third one is the same teachings given in Usui/Tibetan but called Tibetan Reiki. There are numerous Independent Reiki Masters who teach the variations of Tibetan Reiki.
8. The Radiance Technique® (TRTAI) LINEAGE: Usui - Hayashi - Takata - Dr. Barbara Ray... ORIGIN: Originally Dr. Ray taught just plain reiki in 3 degrees; as time went on she claimed that she was the Grand Master of Reiki, that Takata had given her all of the keys of Mastership. Several years later she said Reiki was polluted so she changed the name of what she taught to The Radiance Technique®. DEGREES or Levels: Ray teaches 7 levels. The Radiance Technique® is similar in form to Usui, and Raku Kei. First Degree: 4 attunements; teaches history, percepts/principles, hand positions. Second Degree: 1 attunement: teaches, distance healing technique, and 3 traditional symbols. Ray does not give the sacred names for the symbols in second degree instead she calls them; Cosmic Pattern 1 (power symbol), Cosmic Pattern 4 (mental/emotional symbol) and Cosmic Pattern 22 (distance symbol). Later in higher degrees she gives the sacred Japanese names (mantras) for the symbols. Her symbols are identical to the ones that Rand teaches (as far as we know, all the way up to 7th degree). The attunement process is slightly different from the others in form. A technique to empower the breath is taught which is nothing like the techniques above. From all we know about The Radiance Technique®, Dr. Ray does have/give more symbols then Phyllis (Takata's granddaughter), maybe she got them from research or maybe from Takata. In Radiance, Third Degree can teach: first and second degrees; Fourth Degree can teach: first, second and third; Fifth Degree can teach the addition of fourth; Sixth Degree teaches fifth and Seventh Degree can teach every level. Reiki Plus® ORIGIN: Reiki Plus® is a system developed by David Jarrell and he is the founder of the Reiki Plus® Institute. He has taken the Traditional Reiki information and combined it with other information and classes. Those who attend RPI are offered the opportunity to become ministers in his church. DEGREES or Levels: 4 Reiki Practitioner Degrees, plus Master Level in the 2 Reiki Programs. The institute offers 5 programs including: Reiki Plus® Practitioner's Program, Reiki Plus® Mastership Program for Teachers, PSEBsm Practitioner's Program, PSEBsm Mastership Program, Reiki Plus® Home Study Program, plus electives. The RPI offers 310 hours of formal education. The Practitioner's Certification requires 155 hours of class room training and successful completion of an examination. All current Reiki Plus® Masters have completed the required training and have spent 3 - 9 years practicing, studying and traveling in tutorial study with David. The RPI is paralleled by the Pyramids of Light Church, which is a church of Natural Healing and is Federally recognized as a church of healing through Reiki Plus(s)® and Etheric Body Healing. The RPI is also a Class A Provider for the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) and all classes in the RPI earn credit hours to sit the national massage exam. The training offered by RPI and their Reiki Plus® Masters spans from the core principles of Reiki to counseling approaches, Etheric Body Chakra Healing, Soul Level healing techniques and training about the Ascended Masters and Spiritual Discernment. Their website: http://www.reikiplus.com 10. Johrei or Jo Reiki ORIGIN: Johrei Reiki is a combination of Raku Kei Reiki and the Religion Johrei. The Johrei Fellowship does not recognize it as part of what they do and they have trademarked the name Johrei so that any unauthorized usage is forbidden. It is believed that several Reiki Masters who were trained in Raku Kei broke off and began teaching the system as Johrei Reiki. This system of Reiki is no longer being taught under the name Johrei Reiki. DEGREES or Levels: 1 Mastership. The class takes you from first degree through Mastership in a weekend. 3 initiations. We have met several Johrei Reiki Masters. They have master level energy with very little knowledge, all they really know how to do is the initiation. They want to teach but don't know what to teach. They don't appear to know the fundamentals of hands-on, the symbols or their meaning very well. We can't say this is true for every Jorei Reiki Master only for the ones that we have met. Following is a letter from the Johrei Fellowship regarding Johrei and Reiki: "Dear Reiki Master/Sensei: For years we, the Johrei Fellowship, have had Reiki Masters and others with Reiki backgrounds express interest in Johrei. Many of the interested people actually become Johrei channels. However, generally speaking, very few people with Reiki backgrounds remain Johrei members for very long. We now believe that this happens because the goals of Johrei and the goals of Reiki are different.The following is a general background of Johrei, Johrei Fellowship and a description of the relationship between Johrei and Reiki. Some points will be strongly stated to prevent any misunderstanding.The International Johrei movement began in Japan by Mokichi Okada (aka Meishu-sama 1882-1955). God revealed to Okada that the creation of a Paradise on Earth, a world of truth, virtue and beauty would soon happen. Through revelations he learned that the cause of the three misfortunes of sickness, poverty and conflict was spiritual, and that the spiritual causes could gradually be eliminated by the channeling of JOHREI®.So the goal of the International organization he created is the creation of a Paradise on Earth. Johrei is merely a tool to help in its creation. Although we have many miraculous "healings" through Johrei, our goal is not to heal. Through the years it appears that the Reiki community is constantly changing with different terminology and beliefs, depending on the teacher...Years back, the Johrei Fellowship legally trademarked the word Johrei." In recent years, several Reiki Masters used the word "Johrei" as part of their Reiki presentation (e.g. "Johrei Reiki") without permission. One can understand our concern, especially when you think about the differences between Johrei and Reiki. It took much energy and money to stop the illegal usage. Although in each case letters are sent on a cordial and friendly basis, the majority of these people have reacted angrily and negatively. Men Chho Reiki® or Medicine Dharma Rei Kei© Also sometimes referred to as Vajrayana Reiki LINEAGE: Dr. Usui...reconstructed by Lama Yeshe Drugpa Thrinley Odzer... ORIGIN: Reconstructed teachings from Dr. Usui's written notes, letters to his students and the Buddhist material he studied and taught including a secret and rare Buddhist Tantra - The Path of the Thunderbolt of Transcendent Light That Heals the Body and Illumines the Mind. The teachings place Usui as a Buddhist and is known as the "Kind Physician Bodhisattva". The actual teachings of Dr.Usui and his senior students, and Buddhist material are being translated from Sanskrit, Chinese and Japanese and are being reconstructed by Lama Yeshe Drugpa Thrinley Odzer, the current Spiritual advisor of the Men Chhos Rei Kei Institute. Lama Yeshe is a recognized Drugpa Kargyu Lama of the Drugpa Kargyu Order of Bhutan, and a former Shingon Buddhist. He received full Shingon empowerments in 1989 from the noted yogi and Shingon practitioner Dr. Ajari Werrick. Lama Yeshe is the Spiritual Director and a Teacher in the Institute. Lama Yeshe (Dr. Richard Blackwell, son of General George Blackwell) holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology and resides at his Hermitage near O'Brien, Oregon.What is Men Chhos Rei Kei? Men Chhos Rei Kei is a system of spiritual healing based on the reconstructed teachings from the Buddhist Tantra "The Path of the Thunderbolt of Transcendent Light that Heals the Body and Illumines the Mind". What is the Institute for the Study and Propagation of Men Chhos Rei Kei? The Institute is a teaching organization, registered in the same manner as any private school or University, the sole purpose of which is the promulgation and teaching of Rei Kei as found in the Buddhist Tantra "The Path of the Thunderbolt of Transcendent Light that Heals the Body and Illumines the Mind", and the notes and correspondence of Dr. Usui and Dr. Watanabe which were purchased in 1946 by General George Blackwell, while in Japan. DEGREES or Levels: 7 Levels: First Level: 1 attunement, 5 symbols some similar to traditional Usui reiki some not, is available to any one and forms the regular Reiki 1-3 as taught in most lineages of Reiki. The advanced levels (2-7) can be studied by all who take Vajrayana Buddhist Refuge - as they were taught by Dr. Usui. 12. Traditional Japanese Reiki Traditional Japanese Reiki (TJR) does not hold the belief that an Attunement can pass on a lineage. The ability to practice and pass on the system comes with the very first connecting attunement and has nothing to do with the use of (or knowledge of) any symbol, mantra or mudra. The system has no hierarchy, no 'masters' and no concept of a 'grand master' or 'lineagebearer'. They consider TJR to be a 'school' of Usui's healing system and not a 'variant' of Takata's 'school'. ANCESTRY: Dave King claims the following ancestry by training: First Connection: Mikao Usui, Toshihiro Eguchi, Goro Miyazuki, Yuji Ohnuki (Agadir, Morocco - 1971). TJR: Mikao Usui, Chujiro Hayashi, Tatsumi (Japan - 1995/96). Other Reiki studies: Mikao Usui, Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata, Rick Bockner,
Wanda Zwaan (Edmonton - 1993) ORIGIN: Most of this information originates directly from surviving descendents of Mikao Usui that live and work in Japan as well as from one of Chujiro Hayashi's students, Tatsumi, who died in 1996 at an age of over 90 years. This information does not originate from Mrs. Takata or Any of the Western lineages. The whole system is driven solely by the intent of the practitioner who has at his/her disposal a number of 'tools' that affect the way the energy is directed. The original purpose of the Usui healing system was to heal the whole person (body, mind and spirit). It treats the SELF and then may be used to treat others through the self. The system has no connection whatsoever with Indo-Tibetan energy work or Tibetan vajrayana Buddhism. DEGREES: There are five levels of achievement and three 'degrees': First Degree: (4 attunements) reiki student is connected to the system by means of four 'connecting transformations' or 'attunements'. These provide a complete connection and are a fundamental part of the process. Second Degree: (3 attunements, 3 symbols) Transformations/attunements are given to access to the various tools/symbols. Each tool/symbol is a filter that acts on the Reiki energy, drawing the symbol performs a body/mind connection that activates it. Level II attunements are known as Control Transformations. Third Degree: (1 attunement, 1 symbol) This level contains material not contained in the Western Reiki systems. It does contain some of the material given out at the "master" level of the Reiki Alliance and in "level 3A" of the Reiki Training Center in Michigan. This level teaches self empowerment and requires a good practical understanding of the practitioner division material. Teacher level: this follows on from level III. It enables a student to pass on levels I, II and III and is a form of apprenticeship. This level teaches the student the theory and practise of the transformations. Unlike Western schools this level does not permit teaching another teacher. In order to be a teacher of TJR one must make a commitment to follow the school's code of ethics. Senior teacher level: Only senior teachers can train another teacher. This level requires a lengthy study of the inner workings of the system and the writing of a thesis. This level goes deeply into qigong, traditional Chinese medicine, feng shui and other Taoist energy work. 13. Satya Japanese Reiki LINEAGE: Usui - Toshihiro Iguchi - Goro Miyazaki - Mieko Mitsui - Takahashi - Toshitaka Mochizuki - Shingo Sakuma... Mieko Mitsui also took training with Dr. Barbara Ray. ORIGIN: This is another branch of Reiki which originated in Japan. It mentions Hayashi and Takata as having learned Reiki, but the lineage is Eastern. The only Western influences came from Mieko Mitsui who also studied The Radiance Techinque. The teachings are very similar to The Radiance Technique but with a simpler approach. Satya Reiki is found most widely in India. DEGREES or Levels: 3 degrees/4 symbols. Second Degree: 3 attunement (one to each symbol); teaches the 3 traditional/original symbols and appropriate Mantras/sacred names; how to draw/use. 14. Reiki Jin-Kei Do© The Eastern Lineage of Usui Reiki via Venerable Seiji Takamori LINEAGE: Usui - Hayashi - Sensei Takeuchi - Venerable Seiji Takamori - Dr. Ranga J. Premaratna (Lineage Head). ORIGIN: This a is distinct lineage of Reiki, not a modified or reconstructed or channelled form. The name was given by Ranga Premaratna to help distinguish it from other lines of teaching. The name translates as "Reiki: The Path (Integration) of Compassion (Karuna) and Wisdom (Pragna)". Reiki Jin-Kei Do is the practice of Reiki with compassion and wisdom in a balanced way and applying them to one's life. It then becomes a way of life rather than just another healing method. The lineage is also a spiritual one because it emphasizes the practice of meditation as a daily practice with Reiki. It also focuses on compassion (and loving kindness) and opening of the heart through meditation and Reiki. The teachings differ from the Takata lineages due to the transmission via a line of Buddhist Reiki Masters - consequently, there is an emphasis on Reiki healing on various levels of body/mind/spirit is an aspect of the progress towards Enlightenment or spiritual fulfillment. 15. EnerSense-Buddho LINEAGE: Part of teachings & transmission from Usui via - Hayashi - Takeuchi - Takamori - Premaratna. ORIGINS: Claimed to be from Buddhist Lamas of Nepal, Tibet and Northern India. Ven. Seiji Takamori (a Buddhist monk) researched Reiki and specific meditation practices transmitted to him from Dr. Usui. He found a complete system of spiritual discipline which related to healing, and recognized in this the original practices relating to Reiki. These transmitted teachings from Usui and the Lamas are taught in 4 stages under the name of EnerSense-Buddho. They involve a meditational practice and empowerments, and use ancient symbology, mantras, yantras, Buddhist deity visualizations, marma point healing, chi-nadi exercises, Buddhist teachings and philosophy. The teachings are direct transmitted teachings and are not modified, reconstructed or channeled and are considered to be further studies in the Lineage of Takamori: Reiki Jin-Kei Do. 16. Golden Age Reiki LINEAGE: ...Kathleen Milner, Maggie Larson (Shimara)... ORIGIN: This is a system developed by Shimara. It includes changes to Tera-Mai® material and the addition of numerous channeled symbols, elemental and solar rays of energy. DEGREES or Levels: Reiki is in 3 degrees plus training in other energies 17. New Life Reiki ORIGIN: Claimed to be introduced by the International Institute
of Reiki(a unit of Indian reiki foundation). Also affiliated
to World Newlife Reiki Foundation, UK. 18. Blue Star Reiki ORIGIN: Originally called Blue Star Celestial Energy. John Williams a Reiki Master from South Africa channeled this energy from his guide Makuan in January, 1995. Blue Star Celestial Energy, as described by John Williams, is a transmission of spiritual ability to bridge the gap between God and man-the Rainbow Bridge-enabling the adept to utilize this potential and to function at expanded levels of awareness. Makuan retrieved the knowledge of the Blue Star Celestial Energy System from Os-Mo-Ro-Pup, an Ancient Egyptian Mystery School source. Maintaining a profound sense of balance between mind and heart is the key to the utilization and manifestation of this energy. It is said to be the vehicle for bringing peace and planetary healing as fast as it can happen. Blue Star is not primarily concerned with immediate benefits, such as health, protection, financial gain, and other matters pertaining to the needs of everyday life. Rather, it is aimed towards the growth, evolution, and spiritual development of its practitioners (sounds like Reiki). It protects against the psychological fragmentation which could threaten the psyche during its exposure to multi-dimensional experiences of inter-time travel. In April, 1995 John initiated Gary Jirauch to this energy. Gary modified the system and changed the name to Blue Star Reiki. DEGREES or Levels: 2 Levels. Designed for Reiki and Karuna Reiki Masters. Level 1 is called Os-Mo-Ro-Pup Practitioner and Level 2 is called Master Level. 1 attunement for each level. 14 symbols added by Gary. The Celestial Energies of Blue Star healing may be translated or used at many levels, essential to the cycle of birth and rebirth. The symbols and Hekau Words of Power are powerful and have positive changing effects on the psyche. They contain the God or archetypal energies. Some who work with Blue Star say that it is not Reiki and the only similarity is that it is also Universal Life Force. 19. Mari el® ORIGIN: In 1983 like today, Reiki was going through a process of change. Masters of the system were deciding how Reiki was to be presented; some sided with Barbara Ray and some with Phyllis Furomoto. Ethel Lombardi, one of the master initiated by Takata, rather than taking sides chose to developed her own system which she called Mari-El. Mari represents Mary, Mother of Christ, and El one of the names of God. It is said that Ethel only taught one person how to teach the system and that Mari-El is no longer being taught. An advanced student in Mari-El developed yet another system called Radiant Heart Therapy. DEGREES: One degree with additional classed for advanced techniques. During the first class one attunement was given (very similar to Reiki attunement); and 3 symbols (different than Usui Reiki and called distance, power and Higher Self connection), the symbols were not secret. Also taught were hand positions, a method of doing distance treatment and a series of energy lines to be traced on the client's and practitioners body before doing a treatment (similar to Light Body Activation). In advanced classes, new techniques to use the energy and for clearing were presented. The energy is gentle and heart centered. One technique that students of the system were taught was to walk this gentle energy into the Earth for healing and transmutation. 20. Saku Reiki ORIGIN: Saku Reiki was built by a group of 4 energy healers/holistic medical people who were seeking other alternative methods to increase their patient healing. Their search lead them to Reiki where they studied traditional Usui and Karuna Reiki to Master Level in the United States. They then went to Japan and studied a five step traditional Japanese Reiki program to Mastership. Then to Tibet where they studied with a monk who initiated them into a few more symbols, including another master symbol. DEGREES: 8 Levels or Degrees. Reiki I, Reiki II, 4 additional levels, Reiki Master and Master Teacher. The first class is traditional Reiki I plus study on nutrition; Level II is traditional Reiki II with further study of energy systems. After the traditional level II the Karuna as well as the extra symbols from Tibet, plus a few channeled symbols are taught in four more levels leading to traditional RM and Saku Reiki certification. There is a TRM level is for teaching Saku Reiki which both requires initiations and an extensive apprenticeship even after initiation. Saku Reiki goes into depth, helping a person to heal their own body, mind, emotions, and spirit. 21. Sun Li Chung Reiki ORIGIN: This system comes out of Israel. Yosef Sharon developed it and says "Sun Li Chung Reiki has all the systems and all the symbols in all the dimensions. Most of the knowledge I got by channeling. At first from Mikao Usui himself, till the cosmic level, and then from the council of nine, and later from the Brotherhood of Light, the Peladian council, and the crystal council." Yosef has not been attuned by a Reiki Master, rather he claims to have received all the attunements and information from his guides. The symbols are said to be put into your aura, but none are actually given. Rather it is claimed that they come to the practitioner/master as needed. DEGREES: 5 degrees; thousands of symbols. Reiki I: No symbols given, hands-on treatment taught, class length 6, 3 hour days. Said to be attuned to the energy in all 16 levels of reiki. Reiki II: 1,600 symbols (100 in each of the 16 levels), connection to guides, channeling, treatment with guides, class length 12, 3 hour days. Reiki III/Master: 4,800 symbols (300 in each of the 16 levels), attunements from guides only, mental, emotional and spiritual surgery, working with energetic complements, detachments of complements, and attachment of healthy complements, meditation and the colors of Reiki, class length 12, 4 hour days. Reiki IV/Master: no descriptions given. Reiki Grand Master is said to be passed only to one person who will take over Yosef's roll or be his heir.Follow the link for the history as told in Sun Li Chung Reiki. 22. Jinlap Reiki or Tibetan Jinlap
Maitri Reiki DEGREES/LEVELS: 5 Levels: 1 attunement to each level. 25 symbols. Training is said to include; the Tibetan concept of the five elements in relation to initiation, purification and healing; Meridian Therapy, information on the energetic body including 8 wondrous channels, micro/macrocosmic orbit, psychic pathways and etheric template expansion; distant healing, psychic surgery, trauma release, self-empowerment, and clearing the emotional body. Tibetan Five Element attunement/mantras; said to manifest the positive and for healing past and future conditions. Initiations and special empowerments of the Medicine Buddha, Six Lokas and Bija mantric chakra method and teach how to create Glum-Mo Tibetan healing. 23. Chi Sekai Reiki LINEAGE: Andrea Mikana-Pinkham ORIGIN: This system of Reiki was started by Andrea. It is a combination of Usui Reiki for first and second degrees and Johrei Reiki for Mastership (see Johrei Reiki for more information). Andrea calls herself a Reiki Grand Master. The traditional 3 symbols are given in Second Degree and Johrei Master Symbols given in mastership. No Usui Master symbol is given. The attunements are quite different in form and the student sits on the floor throughout the attunement. There is also another simple procedure which is called a Heart Attunement developed by Andrea. The Heart attunement addresses only the Heart Chakra and is similar to procedures other masters do to attune a chakra or chakras. The Johrei calligraph (White Light symbol) is also given as is the Antahkarana which is called the male/female master symbol. DEGREES: 3 degrees/4 levels. First Degree; 4 attunements, 2 day class. Teaches history and positions for hands-on treatment self and others. The hand positions are quite different and the back is not treated during a self treatment. Second Degree; 1 attunement, 1 day class. Teaches 3 symbols with name and use, how to do distance treatments and a mental healing technique. Master Practitioner Level; 1 attunement, 1 day class. For those who do not wish to teach, but a prerequisite for those going to teacher level. Teaches Johrei Raku master symbols and heart attunement. Master/Teacher Level no attunement, per hour until attunements are learned. Teaches how to do attunements to all three levels and the breath of the Fire Dragon. Usui Master Symbol is not given or used in any attunement. 24. Vajra Reiki ORIGIN: formally Johrei Reiki, now called Vajra Reiki (by some Reiki Masters). The original system known as Johrei began in 1983 and was taught in 3 levels during one weekend class. It closely resembles the teachings of Raku Kei with much removed and some additions (see Johrei Reiki for more information). With the removal of the Usui Master symbol the energy was altered and is said to be adamantine, fiery, and grounded. It is claimed to be primarily for use with the newer, more catastrophic diseases. The attunements were also altered and some Karuna Reiki symbols added. The system, now called "Vajra" Reiki takes it name from Vajrayana Buddhism. DEGREES: 3 degrees/4 levels. First and second degrees are similar to first and second degree in most Reiki systems. The intermediate or 3rd level teaches a symbol similar to a symbol taught in Raku Kei, the Microcosmic orbit, a breath technique, and Deer exercises which must be mastered before the student can go to mastership. Master level teaches the attunement methods and other Johrei and Karuna symbols. The attunement has been altered, includes the use of the Microcosmic Orbit by both master and student and attunes the fingertips, claiming a more directed focus. No Usui Master symbol is given or utilized in any attunement. Mrs.Takata and Reiki Power There's power in them palms. Mrs. Hawayo Takata, the only Reiki master in Hawaii, claims to possess the key to energy. No, it's not a key to ease the energy crisis. "It's a cosmic energy to heal the ill", said the youthful-looking 73-year-old matron. "Reiki, which is applied by hand, goes to the cause and effect. When the cause is removed there will be no effect. It is not associated with any visible material being. It's an unseen spiritual power that radiates vibration and lifts one into harmony. This power is incomprehensible to man, yet every single living being is receiving its blessings. "I believe there is only one Supreme Being - the Absolute
Infinite - a dynamic force that governs the world and the universe.
It is a universal force from the divine spirit and is available
to anyone interested in learning the art of healing. "Reiki
helps attain health, happiness and security which leads to the
road of longevity." As foreseen by her parents, Mrs. Takata reached her "heights". From her 10th-floor suite in the McCully district, she viewed the city with an air of fulfillment. When I finally caught up with her, she had already played nine holes of golf and had given Reiki treatments to several patients. "I've been playing golf every morning for nearly 30 years", she declared. "And I don't ride the cart either - I walk. It's good exercise. Before coming to Honolulu I lived on Hawaii for several years because I wasn't satisfied until I had been on the Big Island. I bought some land, built a home, and remained there for several years". Recalling her past, Mrs. Takata said she wasn't always a picture
of health. In 1935 when she was 35, she suffered from several
illnesses, the major one being asthma. She entered a hospital
in Tokyo for an operation. While there she heard about Reiki
and decided to try it first. While under the care of Reiki master
Chujiro Hayashi for four months, Mrs. Takata recovered. She remained
in Japan for one year and mastered the art of healing. During
the 39 years of practicing Reiki in Hawaii, she acquired clients
from all corners of the globe, including Barbara Hutton and Doris
Duke. The latter broke her wrist in 1957 and was treated by Mrs.
Takata. She became a pupil. "Reiki is available to anyone
who seeks it," said Mrs. Takata. "A proper diet enhances the treatments. Vegetables and
fruits are excellent foods, but never eat when you're worried.
Go to the table only when you're in a pleasant mood. We came
into this world for a purpose so we must have health and happiness
to achieve our goals. I owe my good fortune to my late husband,
Saichi, who was a guiding light until his death in 1930." ©Copyright 1990-1997 The International Center for Reiki Training Reiki is described as coming from the word Raku Kei. Raku is the vertical energy flow and Kei is the horizontal energy flow through the body. Raku Kei is the art and science of Spiritual self improvement based upon teachings from ancient Tibet. Originally the Reiki calligraphy was utilized as part of a system of meditation utilized by the Tibetan Lamas. The participants would sit on a four legged wooden stool in the center of an oval earthenware container (representing Akasa or the etheric egg) filled with water. The stool was inlaid with silver and contained a cubical inlayed symbol upon the seat. One wall of the Temple was covered with highly polished copper; the Lamas prayer and the calligraphs of the Reiki symbols were reflected into it. The participant, sitting on the stool would stare at the wall, allowing the full meaning of the symbols to implant within higher subconscious mind while purifying the body, mind and spirit. Because of the esoteric nature of this practice, it eventually disappeared. A man named Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered in ancient Sanskrit text, the symbols used as a catalyst for this meditation technique. In the beginning the Reiki Calligraphs were only used for self development through meditation and spiritual purification. The system of Reiki has undergone many changes to better appeal to the western mind. The original system of meditation required many, many days of intense concentration and memorization, coupled with exercises and postures. Dr. Usui, as described in the story of Reiki told by Mrs. Takata, went up on a mountain where he fasted and meditated for 21 days. A vision came to him and he experienced the Calligraphs in a higher spiritual vibration, and they implanted his subconscious mind with their meaning and purpose. It was after this experience that he started to teach and work with the sick in body, mind and spirit. In the year 1915 Rolf Jensen, an orderly to a medical doctor
in the U.S. Army went to Japan to study with Japanese medical
doctors. While in Japan, Rolf heard of Dr. Usuis work and began
to search for all he could find about the remarkable system called
Reiki. Rolf returned to the U.S. knowing his search was not complete;
he found some information, but felt he was missing the Master
Key the Tibetan holy men used in the Initiation. Finally in 1952
he found what he thought was the missing Key: a symbol to override
all disease. He worked on many formulas to make it work. Finally
he found his answer in a mixture of Silver Nitrate, the combined
frequencies of the 7 primary colors, and the 7 notes of the musical
scale; when combined they formed the 7 atomic seals that have
been found all throughout the earth. Image left is the Master
Frequency Symbol (also called the Antahkarana Symbol) Shortly after his discovery of the Master Symbol Frequency, he created several Reiki Healing tables. It is said that Mrs. Takata had one of these tables and used it for her attunements. Apparently Mrs. Takata only told Iris Ishikuro, one of her students of this table. Arthur Robertson founder of the American Reiki Master Association studied with Iris and he learned about the tables. After a long search, he found one of the tables in a tiny church in the Superstition Mountains in Arizona. Arthur took the table to Iris in the summer of 1985. Tables and the symbols are now being used by several hundred Japanese and occidental Reiki practitioners throughout the United States. The Raku Kei system of Reiki is known as The Way of the Fire
Dragon. It is claimed to be the same system that Takata taught
with the addition of the Master Frequency generators (originally
created by Rolf Jensen) and the White Light Calligraph (said
to have been added by Ishikuro). It is claimed to differ in application
of attunement and a resulting heightened consciousness. The image
to the right is called the White Light Calligraph in Raku Kei
and Jorei Reiki systems. It is not a Reiki Symbol, it comes from
the religion Johrei and is the Calligraphic name of their primary
God. The history of Reiki as passed down by Hawayo Takata is essentially same history taught by Kathleen Milner (see her book "Reiki and Other Rays of Touch Healing"), however Kathleen adds quite a bit of additional information from other sources. The major differences come in Second Degree and above; Kathleen teaches traditional reiki symbols, non-traditional symbols and Tibetan Symbols, and is continuously giving more symbols to the people she makes Reiki Masters. Some of these symbols have been retrieved intuitively by Kathleen and/or her students. Where did 3 of the non-traditional symbols come from? Kathleen
says that she never felt that the Reiki system was complete;
so, she started asking Mother/Father/God for the truth. She claims
that during a meditation, a Great Being appeared to Marcy Miller
(one of her students), and gave her another symbol and additions
to the attunement. Then the Great Being appeared to Kathleen
on the inner planes, reviewed the attunement process and gave
her a name for the symbol. Several months later Kathleen and
Marcy were given the other symbols with additional instructions.
Kathleen was told to tell people she was working with this Great
Being. When teaching classes, she gives the new symbols, uses
the new attunement method and mentions her experience with the
Great Being; she teaches this system under the name Tera-Mai
Seichim Reiki.
Story Told in One Seichim Branch Centuries ago, southern India was the location of gathering places for scholars and healers. One ancient system of healing wisdom, translated from Egyptian hieroglyphics into Sanskrit was called Seichim (pronounced Say Keym) Living Light Energy. When barbaric tribes invaded the civilized south, those who were able, fled to Tibet, China, Japan, Polynesia and parts unknown. It was at this time the knowledge of Seichim was dispersed and why today there seem to be several different lineages called by different names, yet seemingly so similar in content. Each system has its unique attributes and all work well in conjunction with one another. There seems to be no such thing as too much Living Light Energy. In those long ago times, it took many years of devotion and great personal sacrifice to learn these various healing systems. Most have been traditionally hierarchical for excellent reasons, such as keeping information intact and viable and guarding against misunderstanding, misuse and misinformation. Today the average person is considerably more educated than even the rulers of centuries past. We live in a time, when more than information is necessary to create peaceful lives and a world without hunger or war. Now, a re-establishment of each individuals inherent right to control his or her life is required. Now teachers, who assist each individual to become ever more independent and empowered, are valuable. Repressive systems, requiring elaborate and endless financial and personal sacrifice is no longer meaningful. Systems which require supplicants and promote dependent personality development are dissolving, as individuals become aware of other choices. Spirit cannot be captured or controlled by human beings; it transforms us by its energy. As we experience its healing, we can unlock deeper levels of understanding of the world around us. Seichim What it is and how it works Everyone is born with a personal energy envelope of living light energy. Its what we use to power our bodies, heal broken bones and fight infections. It is this personal energy system that can be stimulated by acupuncture, sound therapy, color therapy, homeopathy, chiropractic and many other techniques, to keep us alive and well. Some of us are born with just enough of an envelope to keep us functional. Some of us are born with much larger envelopes. These are people you may know, who just with touch, can calm a child or ease fevers and headaches. Then there are those who are born with huge energy envelopes like Olga Worrall who has used her energy to heal many people. Often times, after helping to heal so many people this type of healer is drained and needs time to regenerate. Sometimes healers in using their own energy, can develop symptoms similar to the symptoms of those healed. This kind of energy transference is a gift and often a great sacrifice of self in service. Outside the energy in our personal envelopes, there is a vast limitless sea of living light energy. This is a balanced, resonating, harmonizing healing energy available to everyone. It is already integrated. It has no positive or negative charge. It has no yin or yang to consider; its whole and complete, ready to be utilized. Several healing methods have surfaced, that access this sea
of energy. The religious ways require a belief system like prayer,
which many times is combined with the laying-on-of-hands. Other
techniques build mental constructs which connect the healer with
the energy. Through practice, concentration and with training
by high quality teachers like Brugh Joy, people can become channels
for healing energy. Seichim Facets - Expanding the spectrum
of choice Story told in Sun Li Chung Reiki Reiki is a healing technique that originated at the southern part of Tibet. It first became famous in the Inca temples in South America 12,000 years ago, and from there it came to Egypt 9,000 years ago. The reiki techniques came to us from God. In each era in history, we got different symbols that are correct for that era, and that era's diseases. Sun Li Chung Reiki is a system that was common in the Shaulin temples of South Tibet. Sun Li Chung was a holistic Buddhist doctor that developed the system. The basic knowledge he got from is father, and most of it came through channelings with God. Sun Li Chung was born in 1917 B.C. The system was lost when he was killed by Mongolian rioters that came to south Tibet when he was 103. Few of his family survived, but none of them knew all the parts of the reiki system. All classical writings that were found, and Sanskrit writings had only a tiny portion of the knowledge that was knows then, as most of it was burned and lost on that day. The methods that were known in Ancient China were Saichem, Karuna, Yod, Manchurian, Tibetan, Mongolian, Malawian, Tatarian, Alawian, Kokonian, Indian and more. The basis of all systems is the same, as the first symbols are in fact the same. Including the symbols of the Kabala, the pharoes, flower of life, Lemuria, Atlantis and the Islam. In all systems the symbols appear in 16 or more dimensions (levels): earthly, etheric, astral, universal, cosmic, the upper brotherhood of light, the lower brotherhood of light, upper worlds, lower worlds, the upper spiral of angels, the lower spiral of angels, the council of nine, the Paledians, the Pranlians, the upper crystal council, the lower crystal council. There are more dimensions and all systems within them have 62 to 72 symbols. Todays Sun Li Chung Reiki has all the systems and all the symbols in all the dimensions. |
