Aurra emerged as a spinoff of Slave in 1980. Vocalist/trumpeter Steve Washington, saxophonist Tom Lockett, and singers Curt Jones and Starleana Young had previously worked together in Slave during the early '70s. Their biggest hit was 1981's Make up your mind, their only R&B top ten success. They continued on Salsoul until 1982, when Washington went for a solo career. Jones and Young moved Aurra to Next Plateau, where the single Like I like it earned British as well as European chart success. Jones and Young scored a number two R&B single in 1987 with You and me tonight. By this time they were known as Deja. It was one of two Deja singles issued by Virgin that made the charts. The other was That's where you'll find me. Among their full-length releases were 1988's Serious, 1989's Made to be together and 1997's re-release of Like I like it. |
